As a part of deepening our presence in rural geographies, we have 51% of our pan-India branches opened in rural and semi-urban areas. As many as 649 of our branches are in villages that were previously unbanked and underserved.
At March 31, 2022, the Bank had over 21.1 million Basic Savings Bank Deposit customers, of which around 4.4 million customers’ account were opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. The Bank imparts financial literacy and encourages and enables these account holders to transact digitally.
We have taken an initiative to address the needs of under-privileged women through Self-Help Groups (SHGs). SHGs refer to a set of about 10 women engaged in livelihood activities. They typically pool their savings and support each other financially. The Bank has provided loans to over nine million women beneficiaries through more than 692,000 SHGs till March 31, 2022. Of these, 3.8 million were first-time borrowers who did not have any exposure with any other Bank.
The Bank also lends to under-privileged women through Joint Liability Groups (JLGs), which are semi-formal groups from the weaker sections of society. Compared to SHGs, these groups are smaller. Lending to these groups is done through partnership with different institutions who have the network to reach out to these segment of customers. The Bank has provided financial assistance to nearly 1.3 million customers through these partnerships.

ICICI Bank’s inclusive and rural banking approach is inspired by the nation’s deep-rooted ideology of promoting holistic development, with special focus on the deprived sections. Our approach is centred on serving six main rural ecosystems:
India’s agriculture sector is a significant contributor to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employment generation. Our products in this sector are crafted to meet financial needs of rural customers across the agri-value chain: farm inputs and development, farm production, livestock and dairy, machinery and equipment, mandis and markets, warehousing and storage.
In fiscal 2022, ICICI Bank helped rural businesses combat the Covid-induced challenges by providing them with various process and technology enablers. The end customers and channel members benefited from prompt and appropriate action as a result of these initiatives. These digital initiatives have helped save time and ease hassles of customers, who frequently travel 25-30 kms to reach the nearest branch of a bank.
Real-time loan application and KYC at customer’s doorstep
Assessment of historical cropping pattern
Video interaction platform for critical process of loan approval
Digital document generation enabled with eSign
This is a tablet-based app that enables front-end employees to log in loan applications on a real-time basis at the customer’s doorstep. Further, it helps the Bank employee to indicate eligibility of loan applications, complete KYC (Know Your Customer) and provide pre-approved loan offers. Nearly 95% of loan applications for KCC (Kisan Credit Card), SHGs and farm equipment were sourced using Express Agri.
The Bank uses satellite data to assess creditworthiness of farmers without having to visit the farms. ICICI Bank became the first bank in the country and among the few globally when it started harnessing this technique to underwrite loans in 2021. We use 40 parameters for assessing the soil, irrigation potential, rainfall variations, harvesting and crop patterns. Further, we use this information in combination with financial algorithms to make quick lending decisions for farmers within a few days, in contrast to industry practice of at least 15 days. During fiscal 2022, the Bank has expanded this initiative to more than 2,000 villages across Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Telangana. Looking ahead, we plan to extend this initiative to seven more states.
The process helps Bank managers to discuss loan approvals with farmers, where physical field investigation is not possible.
It enables farmers to sign on loan documents in a digital and contactless manner. During fiscal 2022, ICICI Bank enabled eSign of loan documents, bringing in significant savings in terms of time and cost of travel for the customer.
