The Sundarbans region, part of the world’s largest delta in West Bengal, was badly affected by Cyclone Yaas in fiscal 2022. ICICI Bank sanctioned a grant to Kolkata Society for Cultural Heritage, an NGO, for restoration of shelters and livelihood for underprivileged people of Sundarbans. The project envisaged restoration of shelters as well as fresh water ponds which had become salinated due to sea water flooding the mangroves. Over 1,000 shelters that were partially or completely destroyed were repaired which benefited more than 1,150 villagers. Moreover, 100 freshwater ponds were restored, making clean drinking water accessible to over 7,800 villagers. Further, villagers were provided with crab fingerlings and shrimp along with equipment like nets, bamboo and fish food to start fish farming. The hilly terrain of Uttarakhand in the Himalayan belt, coupled with the frequent inclement weather conditions, makes commuting difficult for the villagers. This has an adverse impact on school-going children, as well as livelihood of villagers. In fiscal 2022, ICICI Foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HESCO (Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organisation) for construction of pedestrian bridges. Consequently, the Bank has constructed 15 bridges in as many villages in six districts, providing better connectivity to over 1,500 villagers.
