Types of Mutual Funds
Capital market regulator SEBI has largely classified Mutual Fund schemes based on its
approach adopted towards investment into the following broad categories:
Types of Mutual Funds Offered by ICICI
-
Equity Mutual Funds
-
Debt Mutual Funds
-
Hybrid Mutual Funds
Equity Mutual Funds
These are the types of Mutual Funds that channelise maximum investor resources into Equity and Equity-related asset classes. Such Mutual Funds have maximum exposure to companies that are highly responsive to market changes and generate returns depending on the market and scheme performance. However, this investment strategy associates Equity Mutual Funds to higher risk quotients than other investment products.
In India, there are several types of Equity Mutual Funds recognised by SEBI. For example, Equity Linked Savings Scheme or ELSS, which is a Tax saving Mutual Fund. Similarly, there are other Equity Mutual Funds such as Large Cap, Mid Cap and Small Cap Equity Mutual Funds available in the market.
Debt Mutual Funds
Debt Mutual Funds have maximum exposure to Debt and Money Market Instruments. These types of funds should be the investment products of your choice, if you have a comparatively lower risk-appetite. However, in a well performing market operating on the lower end of the risk spectrum, these funds may yield returns lower than the returns generated by Equity-based Mutual Funds.
Hybrid Mutual Funds
Hybrid Mutual Funds diversify their exposure over a variety of asset classes, including Debt, Equity, Precious Metals, Money Market Instruments, Overseas Securities, etc. to leverage their benefits. This blending of assets enables the Fund Managers to generate returns in line with Equity Funds, while retaining the low-risk quotient of Debt Instruments.
