The rules below apply as per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines in addition to the regular FD rules T&C. In case of a conflict, these terms shall prevail
Penalty on Premature/Partial Closure for NRO & NRE FDs:
In case of premature withdrawal, interest on the deposit shall be paid for the period that it has remained with the bank at the rate that prevailed at the time of booking for the actual tenure of the Term Deposit and not at the contracted rate and post deduction of applicable penalty.
No interest will be paid if the entire deposit amount is withdrawn within 7 days (Domestic and NRO FDs).
No interest will be paid if NRE FD is withdrawn before 1 year from the date of deposit.
Penalties for premature withdrawal are applicable as mentioned below

Penalty and Rules for FDs Without Premature Withdrawal Facility (NRO & NRE):
These FDs cannot be closed before the pre-determined tenure. Premature closure may only be allowed in special cases (e.g., regulatory directions, deceased claims).
In cases of early closure, no interest will be paid and any credited interest will be recovered from the principal.
Overdraft against Fixed Deposit (ODFD) is unavailable for non-withdrawable deposits.
Auto-renewal facility is not available for these FDs.
Minimum term for traditional NRO FDs without premature withdrawal: 3 months.
Maximum term for traditional NRO FDs without premature withdrawal: 10 years.
Minimum term for cumulative NRO FDs without premature withdrawal: 6 months.
Maximum term for cumulative NRO FDs without premature withdrawal: 10 years.
Minimum term for NRE FDs: 1 year.

In what currency can my NRE Fixed Deposit be maintained?
NRE Fixed Deposits are maintained in Indian Rupees (INR).
Can I transfer funds from my existing NRO accounts to open an NRE/FCNR Fixed Deposit?
No, you cannot book an NRE/FCNR FD from an NRO account.
Are my NRO Fixed Deposit funds repatriable?
The principal amount is non-repatriable and can only be used for local payments. However, the interest earned is fully repatriable, along with other current incomes like pensions, dividends, and rent, subject to appropriate documentation from a Chartered Accountant.
