An NRI is an Indian citizen who stays outside India:
(a) for purposes of carrying out employment or any business or vocation;
(b) under circumstances indicating an intention to stay outside India for an uncertain duration;

Who is a PIO?
A citizen of a foreign country (other than a citizen of Bangladesh or Pakistan) is a PIO if
(a) he/ she at any time held an Indian passport; OR
(b) he/ she or either of his/ her parents or any of his/ her grandparents was a citizen of India; OR
(c) spouse (not being a citizen of Bangladesh or Pakistan) of an Indian citizen or (a) or (b) above.

Can I continue to operate my resident account if I open an NRI account?
When you attain non-resident status, you must re-designate your resident account to an NRO (Non-Resident Ordinary) account.
What is the minimum amount with which I can open an NRO Savings Account?
The minimum amount for opening an NRO Savings Account is 15,250.
What is the interest rate payable in NRO savings account?
W.e.f. August 19,2017 , interest for all rupee savings accounts will be calculated on the daily closing balances maintained in the account. Interest will be paid at 4% per annum ( for end of day balances equal to or above INR 50 lacs ) and 3.50% per annum (for end of day balances below INR 50 lacs). Interest so calculated is rounded off to the nearest rupee, ignoring fractions of a rupee.
Are my NRO Savings Account funds repatriable?
The principal amount is not repatriable and can be used only for local payments. However, the interest earned is fully repatriable. Other current incomes such as pensions, dividends, rent, etc are also repatriable, subject to producing the appropriate certificate from a chartered accountant.
Funds up to USD 1 million (or equivalent) per financial year can be repatriated out of the balance held in NRO accounts for any bonafide purpose subject to satisfying documentation requirements
Is interest earned on NRO Savings account taxable in India?
Yes
Can I open my account in any currency?
Yes, you can open your account with INR or any convertible foreign currency. We will convert your currency into INR and open the NRO Savings Account. Your NRO Savings Account will be maintained in only INR.

*This can be opened only with relatives and mode of operation shall be as Former or Survivor as per which only the Primary applicant shall have rights for Financial and Non-Financial transactions. Resident joint applicant can be added as mandate holder.
Where will my Indian salary be credited if I close my resident account?
If you have re-designated your resident account to a new NRO account, your Indian salary will be credited to your new NRO account.
How can I view my tax credit statement for getting details of TDS deducted?

What is DTAA & how can I avail benefit of reduced TDS rates under DTAA?
DTAA stands for Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement. Income Tax rates will be as per DTAA (Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement) agreed between India and various countries, in the case of depositor is resident of any of those countries.
You can avail DTAA benefit on your NRO accounts by providing a self-declaration in the prescribed format, self attested PAN card copy, Form 10F and tax residency certificate for the current year.

What minimum balance would I be required to maintain in my NRE/NRO account?
The minimum Monthly average balance (MAB) required to be maintained is INR 10000 at an account level OR INR 25,000 at Customer ID level.
Customer ID level: Monthly average balance in NRE Savings / Non interest bearing account + Monthly average balance in NRO Savings / Non interest bearing account + Month end balance in Fixed deposit/s and Recurring deposit/s within the same customer ID.
How do you calculate MAB?
MAB is the sum of the daily balances of your account divided by number of days in that month.
Can I convert my Resident Account to NRO account?
Yes. You can convert your Resident Account to NRO Account.
According to FEMA guidelines, when an individual changes his residential status from 'Resident' to 'Non-Resident', he must re-designate his resident account as an NRO (Non-Resident Ordinary) account. Along with the NRO account you can open NRE account.

What is the process for obtaining C.A. Certificate?
Form 15 CB needs to be certified by a Chartered Accountant. To download the form please visit the following link.
On the basis of this certificate, Form 15 CA has to be filled in online at the following link:). The printout generated from this site has to then be signed by the remitter and submitted along with Form 15CB to the branch from where the remittance is being made. The detailed process of filling up the form is also available at the above mentioned site. The filled up form then needs to be produced along with the 15 CB to the branch.
What is the limitation for repatriating funds out of NRO account?
Subject to a limitation of USD 1,000,000, you can repatriate your current income for the current financial year. Current year is the financial year in which the remittance is sought to be made.
Can a joint/mandate holder initiate remittances from NRO account?
In case of NRO account, the joint holder may be resident or non-resident. In case the remittance is being initiated by the resident joint account-holder or the mandate holder, the beneficiary must be the account holder/s. Mandate holder can only repatriate the current income from the NRO account.
Can the proceeds of sale of immovable property be repatriated out of NRO account? What is the process to repatriate such proceeds?
The proceeds of sale of property can be repatriated out of NRO account. The property sale deed and purchase deed should be documented and copies submitted to the branch. If the property was acquired as a gift/inheritance then gift deed or Will/Succession certificate/Certificate of probate/Legal Heirship certificate for the deed should be documented and copies submitted to the branch. If the documents are in any language other then English and Hindi, please submit a translated copy of the same along with the vernacular declaration duly notarized.
The amount sought to be repatriated should not exceed the sales proceeds and should be within the limit of USD 1,000,000 per financial year.
Can I transfer funds from my NRO to an NRE / FCNR account?
Funds from NRO account cannot be transferred to an NRE / FCNR account since funds in an NRO account cannot be repatriated outside India. However, RBI has now permitted transfer from NRO account to NRE account subject to the submission of required documents and subject to total amount of funds transferred to NRE account and/or repatriated abroad through NRO account during this financial year is within the limit of USD One million.

Do banks levy any service charge for use of other bank ATMs in India?
W.e.f. July 15, 2011, there are no charges for the first five transactions (inclusive of financial and non-financial transactions) in the month. Thereafter, applicable charge is Rs.18 per cash withdrawal (financial) and Rs.8.50 per balance inquiry, pin change and mini statement (non-financial) transactions.
What should be done in case during the cash withdrawal process, cash is not disbursed by ATM but the account gets debited for the amount?
The customer may lodge a complaint with the card issuing bank. This process is applicable even if the transaction was carried out at another banks ATM.
How many days maximum would the bank require to re-credit the account for such wrong debits?
As per the RBI instruction, the issuing bank may re-credit such wrongly debited amounts within a maximum period of 7 working days from the receipt of the customer compliant.
In case the compensation is not credited as mandated, what recourse does the customer have?
For all such complaints customer may lodge a complaint with the local Banking Ombudsman if the bank does not respond.
Where can I use the NRO domestic debit card?
Your domestic debit card can be used at any ICICI Bank ATM in India, any other VISA enabled bank ATMs and merchant locations in India.
Are there any transaction limits for the NRO domestic debit card?
Cash withdrawal limit of Rs. 25,000 per day and transaction limit (w.e.f. October 1, 2011) of Rs. 35,000 per day at merchant establishments.
Why do I get only a domestic debit card for my NRO account?
If you have opened a new NRO savings account, you would get a VISA domestic debit card which can be used for cash withdrawals in India and for use at merchant locations in India.
International debit card is not issued for NRO accounts because funds in NRO account are not freely repatriable. If you are holding an existing NRO savings account and are using an ATM card, you would need to apply for a domestic debit card by putting up a request for card re-issuance.

I am holding an ATM card and would like to apply for a NRO domestic debit card. What are the charges for getting the domestic debit card?
There will be a one time nominal charge of Rs. 375 plus applicable service tax. This charge would not be applicable if the deliverable is to be sent to an Indian address.
How is the NRO domestic debit card different from an ATM card?
Both the domestic debit card and ATM card will allow you to make cash withdrawals at ICICI Bank ATMs in India. The domestic debit card in addition would also allow you to make cash withdrawals at other bank’s VISA enabled ATMs in India and make purchase transactions at all VISA enabled merchant locations in India

I have forgotten/ not received my User ID and Password, how can I obtain them?
If you have forgotten your Internet Banking User ID or have not yet received it, please call our 24-hour Customer Care Centre to get the same.
All you will need to do is authenticate yourself and ask for your User Id. You can also request for a new password if you have forgotten the same.
The password would be couriered to you on your address available with the bank.
Your passwords cannot be given on telephone for security reasons.

Yes, you can have separate nominations for different accounts.
If I register a nominee when I open the account, do I have to fill in the nomination every time I make a new deposit?
No, you don't have to go through the same procedure every time. ICICI Bank allows NRIs to give a one-time instruction to make the nominee applicable for all accounts.
Do I need to submit my Permanent Account Number (PAN) to the Bank?
From April 1, 2010 Permanent Account Number (PAN) shall be mandatory for Non-Resident Indians to avail benefit of lower tax deduction under Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) treaty. Hence it is advisable to submit your PAN to the Bank.
Please note that it is also essential to update your PAN number with us for getting TDS certificates, repatriating funds from NRO account as well as getting tax credit in your tax pass book for TDS deducted on your NRO accounts.

What type of bank accounts can be opened by NRIs / PIOs?

What are the tax implication of your funds lying in NRE & NRO?
There is no tax applicable in India on funds lying in your NRE accounts. However, interest earned on NRO account is taxable at the rate of 30% plus applicable cess and surcharge. What are the important regulations pertaining to funds transfer overseas from NRO accounts?

As per these regulations:
- Interest earned in NRO accounts in current financial year is fully repatriable (after deducting tax). However , funds in NRO account can be repatriated only upto USD one million per financial year subject to submission of the following documents:
- Form 15 CA - This is an undertaking that needs to given by the account holder.
- Form 15 CB – This is a document that is to certified by a Chartered Accountant.

- Document proving source of funds

As per these regulations it is mandatory that when you attain non-resident status, you must re-designate your resident account to an NRO (Non-Resident Ordinary) account.

What are the guidelines pertaining Re-KYC?
Please refer RBI Master Circular - Know Your Customer (KYC) norms/ Anti-Money Laundering (AML) standards / Combating of Financing of Terroroism (CFT) / Obligation of Banks under PMLA , 2002 for the said regulations.
As per RBI guidelines , it is mandatory for Banks to periodically update their customer identification data including customer's photograph , identity proof and address proof.

How can you save tax on interest earned in NRO accounts ( Savings account / Fixed Deposit)?
You can save tax on interest earned in NRO accounts by means of DTAA (Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement).
In case of cross border transactions, the income may be taxed in the home country (basis tax residency) as well as source country (where income is earned) leading to double taxation of the same income. In order to avoid this double taxation of income, the home and the source country mutually enter into tax treaty generally known as DTAA. As per DTAA, generally the income may be taxed at a lower rate or nil rate in the source country. To avail the benefit of DTAA in India, Tax Residency Certificate (TRC) along with Form 10 F and Permanent Account Number (PAN) is to be furnished. Wherever tax is applicable as per the DTAA, if the PAN is not furnished ,benefit of concessional rate as per the DTAA shall not be available. Income tax rates will be as per DTAA agreed between India and various countries.
